I held my first funeral service as a professional secular minister last Thursday! A very sad time for the friends and family of the deceased and a nerve wracking one for me but it went as well as can be expected. Humanistic funeral minister services are new to me but they use the same skills that I use in therapy and in my sales background. I am very comfortable with speaking publicly and I am used to listening carefully to find out what is really important to the people involved. It’s important when dealing with people, either as a funeral minister or as a therapist to remember that everyone wants to be treated as an individual. In this particular case, the deceased had lost touch with their family and the family recognised that I could give a better representation of the deceased by communicating directly with friends and colleagues. On the day, both the family and the friends were pleased with the service I was able to provide because I had communicated with the social circle of the deceased. West Road Crematorium in Newcastle-On-Tyne is lovely and I was working with Go As You Please funeral services who are lovely people. They believe that you should have what ever you want at your service and that every service should be made as affordable as possible. Amazing. professional and sympathetic company with great ethics.
